We are excited for you to listen to Patti Phillips’ chat with
Etienne Thomas, the associate athletics director of student life at
The University of Kansas. Etienne joined KU in the summer of 2017
after nearly a decade at her alma mater, North Carolina Central
University. We couldn’t be more grateful that she is now just down
the road from us in Lawrence, Kansas!
Etienne started her athletics career in compliance as an intern at
the University of Iowa, and as a full-time administrator at Howard
University, Saint Paul’s College, and North Carolina Central. While
at NCCU, a Division II HBCU, the institution transitioned to a
Division I-FCS, which is huge and helped pave the way for her
current position as an administrator at a Power Five
institution!
I was left so inspired by how Etienne describes the impact many
women made on her life—from her mother, who pursued her collegiate
degree at Luther College, to her mentor, Dr. Ingrid Wicker McCree,
the current Director of Athletics at North Carolina Central
University, to the student-athletes she has worked with who “become
your historians,” she says. We love that!
